A stunning SEM image of a blood clot, taken on a JEOL 6490LV SEM and colourised using MountainMap software, has won this month's JEOL Image Contest.

Captured by Simone Lauciello from Electron Microscopy at Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, Genoa, Italy, the image shows red blood cells, fibrin and dual-polymer nanoparticles, and simulates the interaction between the blood clot and the DPNs.
