New view of invasive hyacinth

JEOL USA has unveiled a stunning image of the petiole of a water hyacinth, Eicchornia crassipes.
 
The image, captured by Professor Harry (Jack) Horner at Iowa State University, reveals partitioned airspace canals and cellular connective tissue with protruding calcium oxalate styloids.
 
Eichhornia crassipes is an aquatic plant native to the Amazon basin, and is often a highly problematic invasive species outside its native range.
 
Horner imaged the hyacinth sample using a JEOL SEM.
 
The researcher is a leading specialist on plant ultrastructure and has earned an international reputation for his pioneering research. 
 
He focuses on cellular and developmental biology of male sterility in crop plants and plant calcium oxalate, and also heads up the Microscopy and Nanoimaging Facility at Iowa State University.
