Short film, 'Stardust Odyssey', shows us the smallest animated character in the world [Darrowan Prod]

Belgium-based researchers have won a Guinness world record by creating a stop-motion short film with the smallest character ever.

Stardust Odyssey - a microscopic film. [Darrowan Prod]

Working with film director Tibo Pinsard, Pierre Lambert and Youen Vitry from the Transfers, Interfaces and Processes (TIPs) Laboratory of the Université Libre de Bruxelles used scanning electron microscopy to film 'Stardust Odyssey' which features a character only 300 micron tall.

To create the stop-motion SEM footage, Lambert and Vitry printed 250 micro-figurines - in many different positions - using a two-photon laser 3D printer.

According to the researchers, participating in this experiment allowed them to test the limitations of their 3D printer and also consider future research manipulations.

This project is the result of a collaboration between the French company, Darrowan Prod, the University of Franche-Comté (via the FEMTO-ST institute) and the Free University of Brussels.
